Zini water runs red
The tap water is Mtunzini is a dirty brown colour and has been for a week
RESIDENTS in Mtunzini are seeing red but this time it is coming out of their taps.
For the last week a brownish red coloured water has been flowing from taps into baths, basins and showers and Mtunzini residents are concerned.
A water shortage has been blamed as the possible cause of the problem.
uThungulu District Municipality Municipal Manager Mr Mandla Nkosi explained the situation.
‘The uThungulu District Municipality is currently experiencing low water levels in its supply to the Mtunzini area.
The District is supplied by the City of uMlathuze and due to frequent Eskom power outages, compounded by the high demand due to extremely hot weather conditions, the city has indicated that its own supply has been affected.
‘As a result the City is supplying uThungulu full water pressure only at night, and during the day the pressure is restricted. This restriction would cause sediment to settle in the water supply and when the pressure is back on full-force, it gets pumped through to the houses.
‘Residents are urged to consume water sparingly to avoid overuse of the limited resource available. As soon as the water levels stabilise the problem will be resolved,’ Nkosi explained and added, ‘the municipality appeals to residents in the affected areas to collect and store water for domestic use and to use water sparingly.
Avoid watering gardens or filling-up swimming pools.’
