Opportunity for philanthropy funding

Grants are available for community philanthropy projects

PROVIDERS of programmes that address social evils of poverty, unemployment, inequality and the negative impact of climate change may be able to access funding in that regard.

‘The Uthungulu Community Foundation (UCF), through a small grant from the Global Fund for Community Foundations, invites applications from individuals, non-profit – and private and public sector organisations with capabilities to present action oriented fund-raising proposals on sustained promotion of community philanthropy.

‘Submitted proposals, among other things, need to provide a clear description of the project, how the project could be rolled out, monitored and evaluated, as well as expected outcomes and benefits to society,’ said UCF CEO, Chris Mkhize.

‘The project should be completed within six to eight months and submitted project budgets should not exceed R60 000.’

The following are concepts for project proposals:

Education: jobs, job availability, employment readiness, drugs and pregnancies at schools and educational equity.

Environmental sustainability: climate change, environmental justice and sustainability efforts.

Poverty: income inequality and progress on the war on poverty.

Democracy: public accountability and citizen participation in public affairs and public administration, to promote and develop socio-economic values based on coordination, collaboration, self-reliance, self-development and joint problem solving.

‘Successful bidders will be expected to agree to share contents of their proposals with others through publications or conferences.

‘Alternatively, bidders will be expected to agree to have the uThungulu Community Foundation publish under their names contents of their proposals.

‘UCF will appoint a professional or professionals to evaluate submitted proposals and advise the foundation.’

All applications should be submitted to: The Administrative Officer, Ms Mbali Mpanza, uThungulu Community Foundation, PO Box 1748, Richards Bay 3900; phone 035 7971882; fax: 035 7973134; e-mail: MbaliM@ucf.org.za.

The closing date for applications is 30 April.
