Hot, dry summer on the cards as El Niño event confirmed

South African Weather Service warns of hot, dry summer in seasonal outlook

Zululanders can expect a hot, drier-than-normal summer with below-average rainfall for the season.

This, as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (Enso) – currently in a neutral state – is expected to ‘rapidly move towards an El Niño state’ within the next month.

It will continue to strengthen until summer and is expected to last at least until the end of the 2026/27 summer season.

This is according to the South African Weather Service;s Seasonal Climate Watch covering June to October.

“Predictions are more confident now as we have moved out of the reduced performance period for Enso forecasts,” reads the report.

“Current seasonal predictions for South Africa extend towards the transition from winter to spring, so the impact on South Africa for the coming summer can only be estimated from typical El Niño events, which is for a drier and warmer summer season.

“The eastern coastal areas are expected to receive above-normal rainfall during winter and early spring, while minimum and maximum temperatures are largely expected to be above-normal for most parts of South Africa during the winter season.”
