Oil spill in harbour

Wind has carried the oil across the harbour.

CLEAN-UP operations continued through the night after thousands of litres of oil spilled into the harbour yesterday following an Engen delivery pipe burst in the early hours on Monday morning.

Kilometres of sensitive coastline, including the entire Casuarinas beach section, were covered in thick, black oil.
While the spill originated on the coal terminal side of the port, the south-westerly wind had carried the oil across the harbour.

Fears are that should the wind change to north-easterly, the oil will contaminate sensitive mangrove beds on the south ‘mud flats’ end of the harbour.

Engen have not yet issued a statement.
