Drops of hope for Nkandla

Phase two of the scheme is in the pipeline.

THERE was a huge sigh of relief from the people of Nkandla at the completion of the Middledrift water project scheme.

The building of the scheme started in 2011 and aims to supply 10 megalitres of water every day.

Minister of Water Affairs Edna Molewa officially opened the water project scheme along with KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu.

Phase two of the scheme is in the pipeline and on completion, will produce double the amount of water.

The cost of scheme is R64-million and will take R30-million more to expand it further, while the second phase is estimated to cost R140-million.

In the uMvunzane area, there are already pipelines that are being connected to deliver water to the people.

The KZN Premier said the scheme would deliver clean water to the community of Nkandla and this, in turn, would reduce the spread of cholera.

Eighty-one more schemes of this kind are being created throughout the country and 21 more are being designed.

KZN has nine more projects of this kind.
