Farmers welcome rain

Farmers breath a sigh of relief as rain finally falls

RAIN brought welcome relief to farmers in and around Zululand on this week.

Medium to heavy rains started falling on Tuesday and carried on well into Wednesday.

Dave Littley, a farmer in Gingindlovu, said that the rain on Tuesday and Wednesday was definitely welcomed as it been a dry period from December to March for coastal farmers.

‘A marked drop in the crop growth has been noticed and this rain can only help. Hopefully this is not the end of it as some more rain this weekend would do wonders,’ he added.

Good rains fell in Heatonville (36.7mm), Mtubatuba (59.4mm), Umfolozi Flood Plain Flats (53.4mm), Amatikulu (28.5), Gingindlovu (28.5mm) and Empangeni SASRI (28.5mm).

Woodgarth, outside Eshowe, recorded a lower 13mm, with Hluhluwe only 0.7mm.

Moderate rain of 19.3mm was expected to fall on Wednesday in the Richards Bay area, with clear skies on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Light rain is forecast for Wednesday in the Hluhluwe region, while Ulundi and eShowe’s weather pattern is expected to be the same as Richards Bay.
