Best SA surfers drop out early

Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) prime-rated Mr Price Pro was hosted in Ballito last week.

Home advantage did not help South African surfers in the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) prime-rated Mr Price Pro Ballito competition last week.

Only Jordy Smith, Travis Logie and David van Zyl made it through to the second round.

They were eliminated in the third round with Smith finishing third in his heat with 12.97 points, Logie fourth with 10.5 points and Van Zyl third with 11.23 points.

Two of the highlights of the competition was the ‘perfect 10’ by 19-year-old Fillipe Telido from Brazil and Jack Freestone executing four full aerial rotations in a single 30-minute heat on Wednesday.

With smallish waves in the early rounds, aerials were popular with the competitors, but there was soon opportunity for some power surfing as the top guns chased valuable points.
