The City of uMhlathuze municipal council elected Cllr Muzi Mtshali as its new deputy mayor during a special council meeting held today (Thursday).

Mtshali is filling the vacancy left by the late deputy mayor, Christo Botha, who was the DA party’s mayoral candidate in the city.

Recently the Democratic Alliance in KZN announced Mtshali as its caucus leader in the City of uMhlathuze.

Congratulating the new deputy mayor, council Speaker Tobias Gumede said he wishes Mtshali success as he assumes his new responsibilities in serving the residents of the municipality.

Reacting to his election, Deputy Mayor Mtshali expressed his gratitude: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank council for entrusting me with this important responsibility.

“I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to my party, the Democratic Alliance, for its continued confidence in my leadership and potential”.

In the race for the position, Mtshali defeated the ANC’s candidate, Cllr Phiweyinkosi Mhlongo by 36 votes.
