Marathon cycle for charity

Pedal power converts energy into money.

PEDALLING a bike for 12 hours and staying in the same spot may seem a bit pointless – but when it’s done to raise funds for local charities, it makes perfect sense.

Richards Bay Round Table 200 has announced that the region’s first-ever cyclathon will take on 11 October at the Zululand Multi Sport Club.

Beneficiaries from the envisaged hefty proceeds the event will raise are Zululand Hospice, the NSRI and LifeLine and the organisers are confident that the region’s large MTB and road cycling fraternity will be keen to get on their bikes for the cyclathon.

‘The aim is to ride as many km’s as possible in a 12-hour period, from 6am to 6pm,’ said Round Table convener, Jean Schoonhoven.

‘There are three categories: Challenge (1-3 members per team), Corporate and Social (both 3, 6 or 12 members).

‘Each team is asked to raise R3 000 minimum as their entrance fee but the more sponsorship, the better.

‘With only 35 spaces for bikes available, teams should enter asap. Entries close on 3 October.’

On the day, the event will be loads of fun, with plenty of lively music, spot prizes and complementary food and drinks, as well as the chance for brand promotion and team challenges.
