Family critical after eating wild mushrooms
The public has been warned against the consumption of wild mushrooms unless purchased from an established retailer.
IMMEDIATELY after a wholesome home-cooked dinner, a Nyuswa family of five fell critically ill having consumed poisonous wild mushrooms found in their yard.
KZN EMS paramedics in the Ilembe District who responded to the call, included two advanced life support paramedics.
‘The patients presented critical signs and the paramedics worked frantically to provide emergency care along the dark rural road where the patients had been brought to from their house,’said EMS Media Liaison Officer Robert McKenzie.
‘They needed advanced life support intervention, which was provided at the scene before they could be transporting to Osindisweni Hospital for further medical attention,’
Hospital spokesperson Elias Mthimkhulu told the Zululand Observer on Friday that the patients were stable and in good health.
The public has been warned against the consumption of wild mushrooms unless purchased from an established retailer.
‘While the majority of mushrooms found in South Africa are not poisonous, the few that are have resulted in many fatalities over the years. The consequences range from dizziness, severe diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and pains, disorientations and even death.’ McKenzie said.
