‘Debt collectors’ try strong arm scare tactics

Pay up or we break your bones!

‘WE’VE come for the money, and if we don’t get it we will smash up you and your family.’

That was the threat made by a trio of ‘debt collectors’ who confronted an Arboretum Extension man at his home late Friday afternoon.

Claiming to be from Johannesburg, the men said they had been sent to collect R7 000 allegedly owed to their client.

In addition, they demanded a R5 000 collection fee.

‘They said if I did not come up with the money they would very badly harm me and my children,’ said the potential victim, who refused to open the gate to the premises.

‘They could not give me the name of the person the money was allegedly owed to, nor could they show me any documentation or identification.

‘They warned that the real rough guys would next be coming after us.

‘Fortunately my father was at home and he challenged them to meet us at the police station.

‘At this, the men left and two of them climbed into a blue, box-shaped vehicle and the other onto a motorbike, both of which had been parked around the corner in another street.

‘We waited at the police station and when they did not arrive I opened a case for the threats and the scam.’

One of the three white males was described as bald, about 40 years old and ‘the most aggressive’.

The others appeared to be in their mid-twenties, one with long black hair and the other with short blonde hair.

‘I hope that anyone else who has been confronted by this gang will contact the Richards Bay police without delay,’ said the intended target.
