Cows cause chaos in industrial zone
SPCA inspectors have their hands full with cattle collisions in Alton.
AN incident where a cow was knocked over in Alton on Monday night has heightened the concern of employees at companies in this busy Richards Bay industrial area.
Speaking to the Zululand Observer, an anonymous caller reported the incident after witnessing a motorist plough into the animal while on his way home from work at about 10pm.
‘It was really dark and difficult for motorists to see the cattle.
‘The car’s windscreen was damaged and the bonnet was dented,’ the eyewitness said.
A report to the Richards Bay police was made for insurance purposes.
According to Empangeni SPCA’s Inspector, Roland Fivaz said this is one of many incidents which have been reported.
‘In the last six months, there have been four incidents involving cattle in Alton,’ he said.
‘Cattle are not permitted in these areas. When these accidents happen, owners do not come forward because they are aware of the serious implications they will face.
‘This is a complete contravention to the by-laws and could pose serious consequences,’ he added.
In addition to the industrial areas, Fivaz pointed out that cattle are frequently seen in the Richards Bay and Empangeni suburbs, and this could be due to the fact that herd boys neglect their jobs because of bad pay.
Late last year, Birdswood residents were up in arms when cows and bulls were found nonchalantly grazing on their lawns and plants.
