‘Tokoloshe’ taunts neighbours
So convinced is she of the power of the object to do harm, the woman applied to a magistrate to force the owner to remove it.
IN a clash of cultures, a Zulu woman in Arboretum claims her neighbour’s attempt to deter criminals has cast a spell on her property.
The woman, who runs a crèche from her house, says children and teachers began getting sick after a ‘tokoloshe’ image was hung from the neighbour’s yard, facing her house.
Although the figurine looks no different to any number of carved sculptures one might find at an arts and crafts market, she is convinced both the image itself and the intent are evil – even though she has been told it was placed there to intimidate would-be housebreakers.
So convinced is she of the power of the object to do harm, the woman applied to a magistrate to force the owner to remove it.
‘However, he said he could not do anything as it is not on my property.
‘I spoke with another neighbour to appeal to them and I was even prepared to apologise in case I had done something to offend them, but they refused to take it down.’
Acting on advice, the woman – who is a Christian – said she is going to erect a cross facing the image, so that ‘a greater power will prevail’.
