Munique’s painting reflects the pain of human trafficking

A picture worth a thousand words.

THROUGH her art, a talented Richards Bay High School pupil has graphically reflected the pain and suffering of human trafficking.

Munique Vermeulen painted a dramatic image of a slave trade victim bar-coded to symbolise the ‘product’ on sale.

The artwork is a reflection of the pain and suffering of women and children, treated as commercial items with no identities, degraded in mind and body, isolated from assistance, intimidated, terrorised and ‘used’.

‘So many girls go missing every year, and people eventually forget about them and no longer pay attention to their plight.

‘I want to remind people that human trafficking is real and happening, said the Grade 11 learner, who had responded to a local awareness campaign initiated day slavery.

LifeLine Zululand has confirmed cases of human trafficking in the area, although the prevalence is unknown.
