Litter plaque in the suburbs

Arboretum residents want a solution to their litter problem.

RATEPAYERS in Waterberrywood, Arboretum are fed up with the decay in their area.

Locals are continuously faced with the eyesore of litter being flung all over the place owing to overflowing refuse bins, and more recently have to contend with criminals vandalizing their public post boxes.

One of the residents, Delia van der Linde, said she has put up with this for quite some time and hopes that something could be done.

‘This is big problem in this area. There are papers and dirt wherever you look. There was a time I went so far as to getting my own garden services to clean up the mess,’ she said.

Although Ward’s Councilor Dave Merryweather said no formal complaints regarding this issue have been submitted, he undertook to follow up on the matter and get it resolved.

He said the municipality’s street cleaning schedule has been going according to plan.

Another resident, who prefers to remain anonymous, complained that school pupils contribute to the growing litter problem.

‘When these kids wait for their transport, they throw all their chips and sweet papers on the lawns. I have urged the school to educate these children about littering,’ she said.

According to the resident, numerous emails and calls to the school obviously fell on deaf ears.
