Successful Mkhuze game auction
The 'bull of the day' was undoubtedly the biggest nyala bull on auction, with horns measuring 29¾ inches.
PRIVATE game farmers from around South Africa and neighbouring Namibia recently assembled to buy and sell a variety of game at the second Mkhuze Game Auction.
Auctioneer Neil Swart of Vleissentraal said the auction was again a success, with total sales and average sales exceeding those of last year.
This year’s auction saw a much larger variety of antelope than last year and included nyala, waterbuck, red and grey duiker and reedbuck.
Giraffe also went under the hammer, as well as white rhino and some interesting colour variants including a golden wildebeest and black impala.
Although neither the black impala ram nor the golden wildebeest met their reserves of R1.2-million and R1.4-million respectively, both were sold for R450 000 and R850 000 respectively.
The ‘bull of the day’ was undoubtedly the biggest nyala bull on auction, with horns measuring 29¾ inches.
It was sold to a Namibian buyer for R115 000.
The white rhinos on auction did well, with an eight-year-old cow fetching R500 000, while a cow with a yearling bull calf fetched R540 000 and a breeding pair fetched R300 000 each.
The surprise of the day, however, was probably the numerous red duiker which were quickly auctioned off for R26 000 apiece.
Referring to them as ‘the latest craze’, Swart said people like to have the little antelope in their gardens on their game farms.
Total sales at this year’s auction were up on last year’s at R14 218 000 and this year’s average sales for nyala family groups were just over R19 000, up on last year’s R8 000.
