Internship programme supports disabled

Disabled students graduate at Uthungulu Municipality.

UTHUNGULU District Municipality held a graduation ceremony for 14 disabled learners that were a part of the municipality’s 12-month long internship programme.

Hosted at the council chambers on Tuesday morning, the room was filled with the proud group of participants, along with their mentors.

The programme, a collaboration between the municipality and ATHENA Private FET College, was a Fully Funded Transport, Education and Training Authority (TETA) Business Administration NQF Level 2 course.

The prime purpose of the project was for learners to gain the required knowledge and expertise needed for the workplace.

This was done through a mentorship undertaken by senior employees.

Municipal Manager, Mandla Nkosi was in full support of creating opportunities for people living with disabilities, and encouraged the longevity of the initiative.

‘Disability is a reality and it is everybody’s business.

‘Not only did this programme help you, but it also assisted us in ensuring that we cater for your needs.

‘The experience you have gained during this period cannot be bought.

‘We would like to thank you all for the contribution you have made towards the municipality’s success and we wish you everything of the best,’ said Nkosi.

He went on to propose that the municipality should continue its journey in promoting these learnerships, and that government should go above and beyond its call of duty in equipping these learners with the necessary skills.

Aside from the learners showing up for work on a daily basis, they were also required to attend monthly theoretical training, which was executed by the FET College.
