Game capture in full swing for auction
Buyers are given the opportunity to view the nyala, as well as the other animals being offered on the live sale, between 9am and 3pm on the Tuesday before the auction.
WITH the increase interest in nyala at game auctions, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife will be offering 200 animals at their annual game auction, to be held at the Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom in Umhlanga Rocks on Wednesday, 13 May.
The capture of these animals is, however, not an easy task.
Capture crews need to span a net of close to 800 metres around their target animals with no guarantee of catching any of the illusive antelope.
Two vehicles are used to patrol a stretch of road and when nyala are spotted the first drives past the animals, while the second vehicle hangs back.
In silence, except for the odd chopping of a branch, the net is set up in a circle around the animals.
When the ‘induna’ Piwuginkosi Mathunjwa with close to 30 years experience, signals that the nets are in place, the animals are flushed into the nets.
Those caught are quickly blindfolded, removed from the nets, tranquillised and carried in a specially made stretcher to the awaiting vehicle.
They are then transported to the bomas at the Centenary Game Capture Centre in the iMfolozi Game Reserve.
Buyers are given the opportunity to view the nyala, as well as the other animals being offered on the live sale, between 9am and 3pm on the Tuesday before the auction.
Close to 1 800 animals including White Rhino, Blue Wildebeest, blesbok, springbok, warthog, impala, kudu, zebra, Red Hartebeest and giraffe will be offered under the hammer of Brandon Leer.
The number of animals will be confirmed on the day of the sale.
