Mtuba Town Hall fire quickly contained

Residents awoke to the sound of loud bangs at about 2.30am.

CATASTROPHE was averted in the early hours of Thursday morning when a fire at the Mtubatuba Town Hall was contained to the stage area and a portion of the roof before being extinguished.

Residents awoke to the sound of loud bangs at about 2.30am.

Not knowing what to expect, emergency services and security personnel were called to the scene.

Initial reports of the fire being the result of an electrical fault were confirmed by the Mtubatuba Municipality.

‘The cause of the fire is not being investigated by Mtubatuba police because the municipality confirmed it was an electrical fire,’ said Mtubatuba SAPS Communications Officer, Lieutenant Mpontshane, on Friday.

The fire comes a week after COGTA (Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs) unveiled its plans to spend R1.5-billion on upgrading and developing Mtubatuba. Fire damage repairs will undoubtedly be an extra burden for the cash-strapped municipality that was dissolved in February.
