Ex- Zululander aids earthquake victims

The ex- Richards Bay Secondary pupil played a significant role in helping a disaster victim, Shanti KC, who plunged from the first floor of her home in the village of Phutung and shattered both her heels.

WHEN the earthquake disaster struck Nepal last month, former Richards Bay resident and orthopedic surgeon, Dr Leon Moodley, dropped everything in an instant to go and help victims.

The ex- Richards Bay Secondary pupil played a significant role in helping a disaster victim, Shanti KC, who plunged from the first floor of her home in the village of Phutung and shattered both her heels.

She was among about a hundred backlogged hospital patients waiting for surgery.

Moodley heard of her plight when he conducted ward rounds as part of the outreach mission by South African aid organisation, Gift of the Givers.

The Nepal government decreed that all health services were free, but the hospital had no funds available to buy the implants she needed.

‘We stumbled across this hospital and offered buying the implants and doing the procedure.

‘We took her into theatre and operated on both her heels,’ said Moodley.

Moodley’s parents Sonny and Mercy are extremely proud of their son’s selfless efforts.

‘He went back to the country where he completed his medical studies to give back to that community.’

‘He is passionate about the people of Nepal and left his family behind, closed his practice for a week and went to positively impact the lives of those displaced by the natural disaster,’ the Moodleys said.
