Techno boffins seek local students

Unizul nanotechnology research team is a globally recognised group and invites local candidates to join the study of nanomaterials

IMAGINE climbing out of the shower only to discover you have shrunk in the wash by 1 000 million times, and instead of chairs and tables you are surrounded by atoms and molecules?

That is the science of nanotechnology – being able to see the atoms that everything is made of and from it manipulate and create new materials ranging from medicines to computer chips.

The nanotechnology department at the University of Zululand is currently doing extensive research on various projects and welcomes interested candidates to join.

‘The team consists of 12 permanent students, with a further five to six visiting students.’ said Professor of Chemistry, Neerish Revaprasadu.

‘We are able to accommodate interested parties and encourage local students to join,’ he said.

In partnership with Tanzania, the team is using green materials for nanomaterial synthesis.

‘By using products like castor oil as a solvent, we are looking at bio-based starting materials for material synthesis as there is an international trend to use natural products.

‘We have also collaborated with the Durban-based Sugar Milling Research Institute on the use and application of nanocellose.’

‘Our latest project is with stakeholders in Egypt on electronic applications on nanomaterials.’
