Help needed to upgrade créche

Sandra Naidoo aims to provide change in Mzingazi.

RICHARDS Bay community leader Sandra Naidoo is determined to bring change to young children by providing infrastructure and sustainable early childhood development in rural areas.

She recently appealed to local communities and companies to assist her in rebuilding Isiphiwo Créche in Mzingazi outside Richards Bay.

Her goal is to register the establishment with the Department of Education, Health and Social Development.

‘This créche needs more classrooms, a proper playground and a vegetable garden that will help provide for the children’s nutritional needs.

‘Education is the best way to succeed and we must work together to ensure our children get the best. Early childhood development it a crucial stage in a child’s life,’ Naidoo said.

Isiphiwo Créche was established in 1995 by Gladys Khoza (74), who is also passionate about education. She currently takes care of 33 children in a one-room building donated by a local church.

Khoza said the major challenge was the lack of classrooms and study materials such as books,

‘The structure is too small to accommodate all children. Some have to play outside to create room for others.

‘They can’t all fit inside or have nap time because there is no space. It’s also a problem when it rains because others can’t play outside,’ said Khoza.
