‘Shoddy’ workmanship blamed for Home Affairs poop mess

Poor workmanship has been blamed for leaking sewage next to the Home Affairs office in Empangeni.

SEWAGE leaking from a storm water culvert in the greenbelt area next to the Home Affairs building in Empangeni has been attributed to ‘shoddy’ workmanship.

The detritus left in the wake of the passage of hundreds of residents waiting in long queues at the offices lies strewn about the area.

Two weeks ago, the Zululand Observer noticed a strong faecal smell emanating from the culvert while investigating a complaint regarding the mess left behind each day.

A closer look revealed the culvert had been blocked by rubble dumped nearby. A small pool of sewage had formed, decorated with discarded chips packets and cool drink bottles.

Questions were posed to the City of uMhlathuze, regarding the manner in which the situation has festered.

‘Upon receiving this complaint, two teams were dispatched to inspect the site and discovered the sewer leak,’ said City Communication Manager, Mdu Ncalane.

Ncalane confirmed telephonically preliminary investigation had revealed the quality of the workmanship of the sewage system running from the Home Affairs offices was to blame for the sewage leak. The Department of Public Works will be investigating the matter.

‘In terms of the green belt, the matter is still under investigation because the City will have to find ways of maintaining the cleanliness,’ said Ncalane.

‘However we are appealing to members of the public to respect themselves and exercise some decency and refrain from indecent behaviour and utilise public lavatories.’

Ncalane concluded his response by pleading to the public to not litter and ensuring the municipality will keep public areas clean as part of the Back to Basics programme.
