Taxi operators requested to ‘clean-up’

Municipal Manager Dr Nhlanhla Sibeko said the industry needs to be seen to cater for its passengers.

THE taxi industry is a vital segment of society, because without it many people would find it difficult to go to work.

Speakers echoed this sentiment at a transport summit organised by uMhlathuze Municipality to discuss challenges facing the taxi industry under uThungulu.

The meeting, which was attended by all the taxi associations plying their trade within the district, was held on Tuesday at Empangeni Town Hall.

Municipal Manager Dr Nhlanhla Sibeko said the industry needs to be seen to cater for its passengers.

He requested taxi operators to teach their passengers about the importance of keeping their environment clean.

‘Using public transport can help in alleviating traffic congestion, to lessen air-pollution,’ Sibeko added.

uThungulu District Transport Manager P Guma reminded taxi operators about the importance of always having valid operating licenses, and to ensure their vehicles are in good working condition.

‘Speed kills, so taxi drivers must always avoid speeding,’ said Guma.

Taxi bosses speak out

SANTACO KZN Chairperson BB Zondi said, ‘People must stop criticising the taxi industry, but rather help build it.’

He blamed passengers for causing taxi drivers to speed, resulting in accidents.

Zondi reminded taxi operators about the importance of catering for the communities where they do their business.

‘As the taxi industry we want to invest in the future of our children. Last year we donated school uniforms to 8 500 pupils and this year we plan to double the number.’

Zondi made a promise that the taxi industry is now going to be transporting scholars to and from school.

He said they have entered into an agreement with ‘omalume’, hence ‘absorbing’ them into the industry.

Mayor’s promise

City of uMhlathuze Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo pledged his municipality’s undivided support.

He warned the taxi operators against greed.

He further said more money will be spent to widen the road into eSikhaleni, to tar the Madlanzini road, installation of street lights in rural roads, for public safety, for building pedestrian bridges and walkways, for town beautification and for rank upgrades.

Mhlongo concluded by requesting the taxi operators to protect the infrastructure the government provides them.
