Parents must check if crèches are registered

New bylaws are in the process of being drafted for the uThungulu DIstrict Municipality.

WITH early childhood development a crucial part of a toddler’s life, the onus is on parents to ensure that the crèches they enroll their children in are registered.

According to uThungulu Municipal Manager Mandla Nkosi, records reflect that 132 local crèches have registered with the Department of Social Development.

‘The district environmental health section monitors the crèches with regards to compliance with health requirements contained in the childcare services bylaws.’ Nkosi said.

‘However, new bylaws are currently being drafted for the uThungulu District Municipality.

‘It is extremely difficult to monitor crèches which are not registered as they are unknown. Once reports of unregistered crèches are received, they are reported to the relevant bodies.

‘The public is encouraged to verify whether a crèche is registered or not prior to enrolling their children. Unregistered crèches can be reported to the Department of Social Development, City of uMhlathuze Town Planning department or the Environmental Health section at the district municipality.
