Damaged yacht anchors safely in port

Yacht Wasabi fights storm to make it to Richards Bay

AFTER being placed on high alert late last week, NSRI Station 19 Richards Bay confirmed the safe arrival of a damaged yacht.

Yacht Wasabi was sailing along the Mozambique coast on Friday when it entered a storm just off-shore of Ponto Do Ouro.

Nasty weather conditions led to the yacht having to divert from its route to Maputo and instead dock at the Richards Bay port.

TNPA together with NSRI and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre monitored the progress of the 30 foot Wild Cat Catamaran on an hourly basis.

As a precautionary measure, the NSRI sent one of their sea rescue craft to escort the yacht safely into port.

According to the local Deputy Station Commander, Mike Patterson, the incident was under control.

‘Our team stood by throughout the night on Friday, and on Saturday morning the yacht was travelling much better at 10km per hour.

‘We did send out a task team, but discovered the yacht did not need any assistance.

‘I can confirm they were able to repair all damage,’ he said.
