That Mashaba had made a massive impact on the region was clearly evident, with the ANC Youth League especially vocal in their acclaim for the man who seemed destined to rise to the top echelons of the party structure.

The memorial service comprised two segments, one being messages of condolence for Mashaba’s widow, Nobuhle and their families; the other devoted to the loss felt by the ANC itself, along with glowing tributes to the significant role played by the 43-year-old Chairman of the ANC Musa Dladla Region.

At the time of going to press (6pm) buses and taxis were still streaming in to the venue, with the service set to continue well into the night.
