Toasting Janet’s success

Nkwalini woman wins KZN Toastmasters International Prepared Speech Competition

‘IT has been a dream of mine for many years to get involved with youth leadership – in particular young women’.

These are the words of Janet Tocknell from Nkwalini, who won the KZN Toastmasters International Prepared Speech Competition held in Hillcrest.

She says it probably comes from having three daughters of her own.

‘It is my goal to inspire and motivate young people and equip them with the necessary skills they need to cope after school’.

Janet is a founder member of Rhino Toastmasters, which is part of an international society that has taught over four million people communication and leadership skills.

Four months into the Toastmasters programme, Janet gave a speech that was very close to her heart, not realising that the story would have such an impact on so many people’s lives.

To the next level

At that particular meeting, Area Governor for Toastmasters International, Biddy White, heard her story and wanted to create a platform for Janet to share her message.

She entered Janet for the Toastmasters International Prepared Speech Competition, where she initially finished second, giving her an opportunity to go through to the next round.

She ‘tweaked’ her speech and with more confidence, claimed the top prize.

She then participated in the southern African championships in Johannesburg where she was up against 627 contestants from nine countries.

Although she did not win, Janet finished in the top five, more than she had ever imagined possible.

Self confidence

‘It was never about the competition for me.

‘When I joined Toastmasters I had no intention of competing in any such events, but I am so glad I did.

‘It has been the most amazing learning experience for me.

It also ignited a fire within me and rekindled and reminded me of the goal I have always had.

With the unbelievable support and encouragement of her husband and three daughters, Janet has started her own business, Speechless, with the slogan,’Empowering others with your voice’.

‘I would like to encourage everyone, young and old, to seriously consider joining Toastmasters. That is where leaders are made.

‘Believe it or not, your chances of dying of stage fright are extremely slim. Toastmasters is the best place to learn.’
