For whom the toll bells
Local receives 10 Gauteng e-toll demand letters for a bakkie parked in his garage

THE patience of a prominent Richards Bay resident is being severely tested by ‘harassment’ from controversial Gauteng toll road agency, SANRAL.
Retired John Ross College headmaster and popular Rotarian, Peter Terry-Lloyd, is being hounded for an amount of R548.14 in alleged unpaid e-toll fees.
According to the SANRAL Violation Processing Centre, the ‘offender’ has until Monday to pay up or interest will be added to the total.
The letter of demand is accompanied by a photo of the offending vehicle at an e-toll station.
At first amused, and then irritated by no fewer than 10 repeats of the letter, Terry-Lloyd sarcastically pointed out a few blatant errors on the ‘ticket’:
• The registration number in the photo is NRB 24, while his vehicle plate is NRB 224
• His well-travelled 1985 Isuzu bakkie is ‘retired’ in his garage, while the one in the photo is a far more modern Hyundai i20
• His is beige; the other is white.
• Terry-Lloyd doubts his aged bakkie would even succeed in making a trip to Gauteng. Even if it did, it would cost him about R2 500 in fuel alone, which as a pensioner would be prohibitive.
‘I believe that I have made my case very clear, and I trust that your office will not waste any more money on such a useless exercise and that I will not be harassed any further,’ was his blunt message to the e-toll authority.
Having previously taken the trouble to phone SANRAL and being chastised for his ‘attitude’, Terry-Lloyd is prepared to await a summons and arrest, and a free trip to Gauteng to state his case in court.
‘Needless to say, I will not react to this tenth invoice or any other in the future.’
