‘Meat’ the local boerewors champion

A Stanger resident has made it through to the national round of the Shoprite Checkers Boerewors Competition.

HIS self-invented boerewors recipe has landed him a spot as one of the top 18 finalists in the Shoprite Checkers Boerewors Competition.

Stanger resident Pravin Rampiyarand managed to impress the judges with his mouth-watering mixture of flavours, and will now go on to compete against 17 other South African ‘boerie’ experts.

Beating out truckloads of KZN contestants, Pravin believes his daily interaction with his customers works to his advantage.

‘Being a meat market manager, I am able to see what customers enjoy.

‘They let me know what their preferences are and they always have tons of suggestions.’

The self-confessed shy guy, who is married with two kids, admits he is still trying to get used to suddenly being thrown in the spotlight.

‘This competition is certainly forcing me to move out of my comfort zone.

‘I don’t like being the centre of attention, so having to stand in front of a live audience is something completely different,’ he said.

Pravin entered the competition previously and said he was more determined to make it to the top three this year.

‘My family is over the moon about me being a finalist, especially my wife, because she knows my talents in the kitchen.

‘I enjoy helping her with the cooking in my spare time, and the best part is seeing my kids tuck in on the meals I prepared,’ he said.

Judged by the South African Chefs Association, the competition has been running for the past three years and offers all sorts of prizes, including a Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body L45, which the winner will drive away in.

The top 18 round of the competition will take place on 1 August in Cape Town.
