Tips for driving in wet weather

Come rain or shine, reach your destination safely.

DRIVING in the rain can be a scary thing, and in the dark, it is even worse.

It is difficult to see out the window, and other vehicle’s lights seems to make it worse.

Especially when you begin to hydroplane.

Here are some tips to avoid being involved in an accident while it’s raining and to reach one’s destination safely.

• Keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times.

• Switch on your vehicle’s headlights.

• Keep a minimum of a good five-car length from the vehicle in front of you.

• Drive at or below the speed limit at the speed you are comfortable with, and can see far enough in front of you to make the appropriate driving decisions.

• Be aware that the maximum speed at which you can drive is directly related to your tyres.

• Be aware of hydroplaning.

• Try to avoid flooded roads.

• Turn on the defroster if the windshield begins to fog up.

• Be aware that brakes can be affected by water and therefore brake sooner than you normally would during dry weather.

• Watch for splashing from potholes and pools of water that accumulate at clogged storm water drains and low areas of the pavement.

• Use a rain repellent product on side windows and mirrors to clear standing raindrops .

• Carry a cellular telephone to summon help.
