Cops chase down escaped criminal
Hardened felon cornered by police after escaping from eSikhawini Magistrate’s Court holding cells on Thursday
THREE female police officers rearrested a man, who escaped from the holding cells at eSikhawini Magistrate’s Court at around 1pm yesterday.
Two men reportedly climbed through the roof of one of the holding cells and managed to escape while handcuffed together at the wrists.
The three officers, who are members of the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, were at court on unrelated matters when they were alerted by court staff of the escape.
Constable Nongjebo Shandu, Warrant Officer Duduzile Mtshali and Constable Ntobheko Manyoni jumped into their vehicle and gave chase, managing to corner one of the suspects nearby.
‘We managed to subdue him at gunpoint and he was rearrested,’ said Cst Manyoni.
The men had been found guilty on a string of charges relating to robbery, house breaking and murder and were due in court for sentencing today (Friday).
A manhunt has been launched for the second suspect, who remains at large.
