Protect your child online

6 security tips to ensure your child is not exposed to dangerous sites on the Internet.

• Set parental controls on your devices and educate your child thoroughly from a young age about what information they may and may NOT share online

• Buy or download parental control software and keep it updated. Speak to your local Internet provider about your options.

• Agree on a list of websites your child is allowed to visit, and monitor this use by checking their browsing history frequently.

• Set time limits – ie one hour per day – during which your child is allowed online. It is best if this is a time when you are able to monitor their usage.

• If your children are on Facebook, you need to be too. Allow them to have a profile only if you are able to view their activity, and make friends with them in order to monitor uploads and conversations.

• Keep communication open. Talk about online privacy and ensure your children feel they are able to discuss inappropriate behaviour with you.
