Andrew Zaloumis receives Living Planet Award

Recent recipients include Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary-General and the Ministers of Water Affairs of France, Togo and Benin.

IN recognition of his human rights-based conservation and development, Andrew Zaloumis, CEO of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, was this morning named winner of the WWF SA Living Planet 2015 Award.

‘I would like to thank the WWF for this award. I would also like to acknowledge my former ‘boss’ Valli Moosa who was there at the start, and thank all the people who have inspired me and worked alongside me to make this a reality,’ said Zaloumis.

‘The WWF SA Living Planet 2015 Award is our premier award and Andrew is an immensely deserving winner,’ said Dr Morné du Plessis, CEO of WWF (Worldwide Fund for Nature) South Africa.

After not presenting the award last year, Du Plessis said the organisation was determined to give the award to Zaloumis this year for his ‘boldness, visionary approach and courage’.

Globally, the WWF Living Planet Award is a symbol of recognition for people who make a meaningful positive contribution to the environment and to the lives of people.

Since 2000, over 100 such awards have been issued, recognising a wide variety of initiatives from the protection of wildlife to international and government leadership.

Recent recipients include Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary-General and the Ministers of Water Affairs of France, Togo and Benin.
