Putting in the hard yards for charity
The cyclists paid their own costs on the ride, which allowed The Rotary Club of Empangeni to raise approximately R80 000 for local beneficiaries.
LOCALS dusted off their cycling gear and oiled their bicycle chains to take part in the challenging nine-day cycle trip from Beit Bridge to Pongola earlier this month.
The Rotary Club of Empangeni arranged this event as a fund-raiser for Zululand charities.
Known previously as the Rotary Connection Ride from Empangeni to Cape Town to coincide with the Argus race, the new route is known as the Baobab2Coast ride.
Cyclists covered 900km and along the way were greeted by fellow Rotarians from Hoedspruit, Nelspruit, White River and Barberton.
The route has a significant number of tough passes, with some up to 18km long, which included Nelshoogte pass, Blyde Canyon pass through the Strijdom tunnel and Long Tom pass.
Toys, stationery and other items were passed along to the locals along the ride.
The cyclists paid their own costs on the ride, which allowed The Rotary Club of Empangeni to raise approximately R80 000 for local beneficiaries.
By using Rotary’s Global Grant system, at least R20 000 of these funds have been matched by the Rotary Foundation to the extent of R750 000 to help complete the Club’s water tank project.
Other beneficiaries include the Thuthukani adult skills programme, as well as an early childhood development centre.
The club welcomes any further donations to help support local projects.
