Empangeni couple climb Mt Kili
Dhesagee and Logan Pillay took on the challenge in honour of their children.
SPENDING quality time together with your spouse usually involves a stroll on the beach or a romantic dinner.
But for local couple Dhesagee and Logan Pillay, their idea of the perfect getaway was hiking up Mt Kilimanjaro.
Inspired by their children, the couple wanted to show them that one can overcome one’s worst fears and obstacles can become stepping stones for success.
After planning the trip over a year ago, the date was finally set at the couple headed out on 8 September.
The eight-day trip involved making their way to the top of the 5 895m mountain via the adventurous Machame route.
‘We thoroughly enjoyed the Baranco Wall on day four, but nothing compares to being at the summit,’ said Logan.
‘It is breathtaking and pictures and words don’t do any justice.’
The couple began each day with a cup of ginger tea.
‘We had a personal chef who cooked delicious meals for breakfast, lunch and supper, which was elegantly laid out on a tented dining table at each camp site.’

Fuel loading
The hearty breakfast was served to provide fuel for the long days ahead.
Lunch was usually a variety of vegetable soups, fruits and sandwiches, while supper was mainly rice, meat and vegetables.
Cellular reception allowed the couple to keep in touch with loved ones throughout the trip.
‘It was not easy, but it’s definitely not impossible for anybody to do,’ said Logan.
Over time, headaches became more common and simple tasks become quite an effort.
‘Average fitness levels and strong will power are needed, particularly at Stella Point about 2km from the summit.’
While many people turned back at Stella Point owing to the high altitude, Logan and Dhesagee persevered despite all obstacles.
The couple reached the summit on 16 September.
‘Don’t doubt yourself. Find a reason to make it possible, prepare mentally, physically and emotionally and you can do it.’
