Water shortage becomes more critical

Why are we paying for availability, when there is no water? - Melmoth resident

FOR days on end there is no running water in Melmoth as one of the worst droughts in history continues to sweep through the district

The uThungulu District and Mthonjaneni municipalities have been struggling to keep water tanks full amid growing concerns in the community.

Farmers have now stepped forward to offer their dams for municipal use as the sustainability of borehole water source is unclear.

Amid growing concerns over water supply, one resident asked why he was still paying a water availability charge when more often than not his taps are dry.

‘The severe drought has dried up the main water source, Melmoth Dam,’ said uThungulu District Municipality Manager, Mandla Nkosi.

‘Residents are reminded to use the limited supply of water conservatively. Any consumption more than six kilolitres per month will be subject to availability charges.’

Municipal sources confirmed that the borehole currently being used to fill water tanks has become murky, an indication that it could run dry at any time.

With this in mind plans to drill another borehole, as well as install more tanks in town and surrounding areas, were confirmed at meetings last week.

Theft of water tanks has further hampered the municipality’s efforts.
