Human rights denied in uMkhanyakude – DA leader

The water crisis in uMkhanyakude was deemed a human rights violation by the DA's Zwakele Mncwango

A HUMAN Rights Day visit to Mtubatuba by the Democratic Alliance (DA) leader in KwaZulu-Natal, Zwakele Mncwango, left the party appalled at the lack of basic services such as water and education.

‘The rights of the people of uMkhanyakude are violated daily,’ said Mncwango after his visit to KwaMshaya in rural Mtubatuba.

‘How is it that after 22 years of democracy, people in the rural areas of KwaMshaya and other rural areas in this province cannot find jobs, proper housing or decent roads?’. Mncwango chose to visit KwaMshaya as it is one of the areas hardest hit by the drought.

‘On this Human Rights Day, the people of KwaMshaya in uMkhanyakude region are still deprived of their basic human rights to access clean water’.

Mncwango went on to say that it is alleged that, while water tankers are available, they are given to people according to their political affiliation.

While Mtubatuba Municipality was issued with three water tankers to distribute water to communities for free as part of uMkhanyakude’s drought relief programme, last Tuesday all three tankers were standing at the municipal offices.

Last Friday the Zululand Observer photographed people illegally filling their tankers at a municipal borehole with water that is then sold to desperate residents.
