Zululand Eisteddfod in jeopardy

Financial support needed for performance arts competition

IF sponsors are not urgently found, the Zululand Eisteddfod will not take place this year.

The 16th annual Eisteddfod faces a massive task – how to run the event with no funding.

According to organisers not one sponsor has committed to assisting youngsters from around the province to show their artistic worth.

The origin of the Eisteddfod practice can be traced back to the 12th century.

While the practice did ebb and flow over the many years, some circles consider the event as the pinnacle of arts performance.

Eisteddods are held internationally with participants earning valuable recognition in performance art circles.

Owing to the nature of the event, specialised adjudicators must be brought in and their services must be paid for.

‘There are considerable costs involved organising the Eisteddfod,’ said Zululand Eisteddfod Secretary Graaitjie de Villiers.

‘Every child deserves the opportunity to take part in an Eisteddfod.’
