Businessman tackles illegal advertising

Tree felling and garden service provider, George Shacks removed over 50 'illegal signs'

A RICHARDS Bay business owner, who is fed up will illegal advertisements, removed over 50 signboards in different suburbs on Friday.
George Shacks, owner of a tree felling and garden services business, patrolled the streets of Arboretum, Wildenweide and Birdswood in the early hours of the morning removing the ‘illegal advertising’ boards from street poles, traffic lights and the sidewalks.
He loaded them onto his vehicle and delivered them to the City of uMhlathuze municipal offices.
The advertisements were mainly those of tree-feller service providers.
Shacks said the signboards being used are those of political parties and as soon as they are removed, new ones are painted and erected.
‘We as registered companies are losing business, while these people operate for free and use illegal advertising.
‘We have complained about these illegal posters and even when we remove them they are replaced with new signs the following day.
‘As I am addressing this problem I have become a target and have received numerous death threats via calls and sms.
‘Two people were arrested for intimidation last week in connection with these threats and the police are investigating the matter further,’ he said.
