New maternity unit at Somkhele Clinic

The newly-established unit was donated by the Tendele Coal Mine, with a hope it will assist the local communities with their healthcare needs.

THE KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo officially opened a brand new maternity unit at Somkhele Clinic on 12 July, in Mtubatuba.

The R3.9-million facility consists of an emergency room, delivery and the post-natal rooms, each with two beds, toilets, a sluice room and a nurses’ room.

Clad in his army attire, Dhlomo was welcomed by his former colleagues at SANDF 121 South African Infantry Battalion.

The newly-established unit was donated by the Tendele Coal Mine, with a hope it will assist the local communities with their healthcare needs, especially the pregnant women who will soon be able to access maternal services close to where they stay.

Previously most of these women had to travel to as far away as KwaMsane Clinic and Hlabisa Hospital to receive such services.

Local Mpukunyoni Traditional Council leader Inkosi M Mkhwanazi pleaded with his people to safeguard this new facility, and warned them not to vandalise their own amenities when protesting against poor service delivery within their communities.
