Walk warily on the wild side

While they are magnificent to look at and catch on camera, onlookers must keep a good distance

THREE large hippos have taken a liking to the Mzingazi Canal area between Green Africa Nursery and the lake – and they pose great danger on a couple of fronts.

During the day, the hefty trio are generally found in the waters of the canal, but they do from time to time take to the shores.

While they are magnificent to look at and catch on camera, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife District Conservation Officer, Frans Mthembu, says onlookers must keep a good distance.

‘Despite their bulk and shape, these creatures can move incredibly fast, both in the water and on land, and it would be difficult to outrun them.

‘I am even more concerned after it gets dark, when they browse on land.

‘I have seen people leave their cars and try to get closer to take photos or even selfies. This is suicidal behaviour,’ said Mthembu.

‘Hippos can be very aggressive, especially if their young are present.

‘Another problem is that they do cross the John Ross Parkway in the dark as they move between the canal and the lake.

‘It’s not easy to spot them and I really am concerned we might have a bad accident, so please slow down along that section.’
