UPDATE: IFP walks it in Nquthu by-election

The ANC won four wards (6, 10, 16 and 17, but lost wards 1, 13 and 14 to the IFP

IN the hotly contested Nquthu by-elections yesterday, the IFP took 13 of the 17 wards, giving them the majority ward councillors in the municipality.

The ANC won four wards (6, 10, 16 and 17, but lost wards 1, 13 and 14 to the IFP.

The by-elections ended up as a two-horse race between the two parties, with none of the other 12 parties who put forward candidates attracting any significant number of votes.

The Nquthu Municipality found itself in a stalemate situation following the local government elections last year with neither of the parties budging to resolve the matter.

The political parties were unable to form a coalition and Cogta intervened by dissolving the municipality, making way for the by-elections in all 17 wards.

The final councillor list is still to be determined once the proportional representative votes are determined.
