Colleges the answer to skills shortages

Youth Council reaches out

ADDRESSING the shortage of skills among the youth will remain a pipe dream unless we change our mindset and redirect more of our students to TVET Colleges, since they hold the key to the future.

This was the main theme of uMhlathuze Youth Council Chairperson Wiwi Gumede’s address to students at Qhamuka High School, near Macekane, during a career guidance day.

This was the Youth Council’s first career guidance initiative targeting two rural schools, Bhekikusasa High and Qhamuka High, under one roof.

‘We need to broaden our thinking, and stop confining ourselves to university education only. Universities are relevant, of course, but we will never address the skills shortages if we undermine the impact of TVET Colleges.

He stressed the importance of choosing a career that will add value to the community and the country at large, saying TVET Colleges should serve as first preference for high school students.

‘We also want to appeal to you to apply early for the National Students Fund Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to avoid any disappointment in the following year.’

The career guidance talk was facilitated by ANHEF Academic Club, uMfolozi TVET College, University of Zululand, Owen Sithole College and the uMhlathuze Youth Council. City of uMhlathuze Youth Manager Njabulo Ntuli was also in attendance.
