University of Zululand science festival goes large

Explosive fest celebrates 'Africanology'

THE annual University of Zululand Science Festival was explosive this year, with more than 5 000 people attending the five-day event.

It was held between 22 and 27 May at the Unizulu Science Centre (USC), Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre and various local schools and restaurants.

Celebrating ‘Africanology’, some of the exciting presentations included ‘Africa Clockwise’ by comedian and eco-warrior Mark Sampson, who travels around Africa in a truck running on cooking oil and solar power, and ‘Great South African Inventions’ by Professor Mike Bruton.

Excited learners from Dlangezwa High School attended the science festival

Scientists from the SA National Space Agency and Square Kilometre Array (SKA) illustrated how South Africa is not lagging behind in the space race.

And home-grown company Bell Equipment’s engineers and artisans presented the inspiring story on how local innovation led to the manufacturer becoming a global player.

On the international front, volunteers from the Japanese International Collaboration Agency (JICA) and the US Peace Corps presented a variety of programmes, from robotics to HIV/Aids education.

Reptile City owner Riaan Rossouw also kept the crowds entertained with an array of snakes and crocodiles.

‘Anyone who missed the excitement can contact the USC on 035 7973204 to organise a visit,’ said Director Derek Fish.
