Transnet gives community massive relief

Transnet digs deep for flood victims

WHILE the country’s eyes are focused on the disasters in the Western Cape, locals also in need of social relief after recent flash floods have not been forgotten.

Transnet heeded an appeal by the uMhlathuze Municipality to local businesses to assist the destitute victims from their community.

The response from Transnet was an effort that raised more than R100 000 for the purchase of food parcels, school shoes and other desperately needed necessities.

Handing over the donation on Thursday, Mlamuli Buthelezi, Transnet’s Group Chief Operating Officer, remarked that he was proud of the efforts of Transnet Port Terminals, Transnet Freight Rail and Transnet National Ports Authority in assisting the 200 people who had been displaced from their households as a result of the floods.

‘We hope the food parcels and the school shoes we donate today to the affected learners and the elderly people in the community of uMhlathuze will provide hope and sustenance.

‘As much as Transnet plays an important role in strengthening our region’s economy, we also believe in the shared value of giving back to the communities we operate in.’

Speaker of uMhlathuze Municipality Cllr Mfundo Mthenjana, revealed that the flash floods caused severe damages and washed away homes of many of the 300 000 residents of the area.

‘Our disaster management teams provided temporary accommodation for some of the victims, but there was need for more work to assist the victims and confront this plight,’ he stated.

He expressed gratitude to Transnet Group and its Operating Divisions for their generous donations.
