Mkhize calls for ANC unity ahead of policy conference

Alliance is here to stay says Mkhize

THE biggest challenge facing the ANC is to emerge from the national policy conference as a united force. This was the sentiment of ANC Treasurer General Zweli Mkhize when addressing delegates at the ANC KZN Provincial General Council at the University of Zululand last week.

Mkhize expressed his sadness about what he called factionalism within the ruling party.’Factionalism has been a great concern to many of us. These issues have been raised for a long time and we must attend to them before it’s too late.

‘The tension that we have must be dealt with so that when we go to the policy conference, we speak with one voice,’ he said.On the issue of succession, Mkhize said this must be handled with caution.

‘We need to discourage division. The divisions persisting in KZN are a challenge, and whatever happens in KZN will have an impact on the national conference.’Equally, we must find ways to resolve differences with our alliance partners.

The time for the alliance to break up has not come.’We are engaging with the leadership of our alliance partners, in particular those who have called for the President to step down.

‘We are aware of the challenges facing the party, and as the NEC we took a decision that we will support the establishment of a judicial commission to probe what is now known as the state capture reports.’We must not allow the opposition to look better than us.

We remain the only organisation that has the capacity to deliver basic services to the people. We have the instrument to transform society and improve their lives,’ he said. The PGC was also addressed by President Jacob Zuma, who arrived late.

Zuma said he would be happy to see ANC members going to a policy conference knowing full well what is happening in the oldest liberation movement.’It’s true that most liberation movements go through difficulties after 20 years in power, and I had thought this was not going to happen to us as the ANC.’
