New signboard welcomed for Empangeni suburb

City of uMhlathuze spokesperson said the municipality was committed to deliver on its promises

RESIDENTS of Dumisani Makhaye Village have commended the City of uMhlathuze for finally giving the area the recognition it deserves.

‘We are happy that the municipality has installed a new signboard confirming our rightful name as Dumisani Makhaye Village,’ said Sfundo Mnguni, a resident and youth leader.

Mnguni said he hoped the installation of this board will put to rest the confusion which existed about the area’s name.

‘For some time now we have been known as Dark City, Delunina and uMhlathuze Village, all which had no significance in this area.

‘We feel humbled to be associated with the name of a struggle icon and freedom fighter such as Dumisani Makhaye.

‘He was the KZN Housing MEC who turned the sod for this housing project after the municipality had bought the land from a farmer.

‘We can only appeal to the municipality to erect more signboards, as well as street name signage so that emergency services and police have quick reference during call-outs.’

City of uMhlathuze Communications Manager, Mduduzi Ncalane, said the municipality was committed to deliver on its promise to better the lives of the people of Dumisani Makhaye Village.

‘We are busy with other infrastructural development projects in the village, which includes the renaming of the streets,’ he said.
