Don’t post crime suspect photos online – cops give warning

Social media postings warning

POLICE are poised to act against persons who post crime scene photos or videos of arrested suspects – or potential witnesses – on social media platforms.

A top level SAPS communication issued this week warned against the practice of distributing such images on WhatsApp, Facebook or other platforms, saying it could constitute a suspect’s right to a fair trial and could render identification parades invalid.

It called for the immediate end to the publishing of images prior to a court appearance and warned contravention of the particular Act could result in a fine or as much as 12 months imprisonment.

The memorandum also cautioned SAPS or other anti-crime groups about ‘leaking’ suspects’ photos, sensitive information or pending police operations to the media or general public, which could jeopardise or result in civil claims and disciplinary processes.
