Sassa warns of misleading information circulating on social media

Sassa’s Grant in Aid is an additional payment to qualifying beneficiaries who, because of physical or mental challenges, require regular assistance.

However, KZN Sassa spokesperson Mbizeni Mdlalose has warned of misleading information being shared on WhatsApp and other platforms.

“A circulating message falsely claims that people over the age of 70 who suffer from chronic illnesses or take chronic medication automatically qualify for an additional R500 per month on top of their existing social grant,” said Mdlalose.

“Being over the age of 70, suffering from a chronic illness, or taking chronic medication does not automatically qualify a beneficiary for Grant in Aid.

“A beneficiary who wishes to apply for the Grant in Aid must visit their nearest Sassa office, where their details will be captured and the required biometric enrolment will be completed.

“Once this process has been completed, the beneficiary will be provided with a date to present themselves for a medical assessment by a Sassa medical practitioner.”

After conducting the medical assessment, the medical practitioner will determine whether or not the beneficiary qualifies for Grant in Aid assistance.

“Members of the public are encouraged to verify information before sharing it and to obtain accurate information directly from their nearest Sassa office or official Sassa communication channels.”
